A programme of music that paradoxically takes us to the heart of human sorrow whilst enabling us to transcend it through ravishing choral beauty.

The Stabat Mater is without doubt, one of the most powerful poems of the liturgy and one which has inspired artists through the ages. This programme takes the grief of Mary, mother of Jesus, as its starting point, showcasing contrasting interpretations of this moving text, from the intricate harmonic language of contemporary composer Alissa Firsova, drawing on her roots in Russian Orthodoxy, to the exquisite contrapuntal poise of Palestrina, and Anerio’s glorious and ambitious 12-part setting.
